French Surrealist Portrait Oil on Board, Gérard Andrès
French Surrealist Portrait Oil on Board, Gérard Andrès
A striking surrealist abstract study of two figures. This large figurative oil painting dates to the 1970s and is French in origin. The artist has used simplified forms, as well as an expressive and muted palette of blues and purples. Andrès was born in 1956 in Algeria and trained in drawing at the Schaffer Academy in Agen. He worked as decorative painter at the Théâtre des Arts de Rouen, whose workshop he joined in 1967. He was known for his finely embroidered costumes and abstract oil and watercolours. A large collection of his works were sold at auction in 2021. Provenance: sourced at auction, previously from a private collection of this artist's work in Normandy, France. Unsigned but attributed to the artist.
